Service Abnormal Liver Test / Liver Disease

Anatomy of woman's liver with liver disease

Overview

Abnormal liver test may be picked up on a routine blood test or because you have had symptoms such as upper abdominal pain. There are many different causes of abnormal liver tests which can relate to the liver or the biliary system, which is a component of it. Other conditions which can affect other parts of your body, such as haemochromatosis, can also affect your liver.

Treatment

Investigation of underlying causes for your abnormal liver test, of which there could be more than one. If there is a liver disease that can be treated medically, I am able to initiate this.

Assessment of whether there is any evidence of scarring (fibrosis) or even cirrhosis (permanent scarring) of the liver. Rarely, a liver biopsy (a small sample of the liver) is required to help with diagnosis. I will organise any scans that are required.

Aftercare

For chronic conditions, I will follow up with you and continue any necessary treatment/assessments. If cirrhosis is confirmed, I will organise any relevant treatments/investigations required to screen for/treat any complications.
